My Mission Possible – I choose to accept it!

In the following months and beyond I will work through the Think and Grow Rich book, sharing with you all the Principles outlined in the book, following all the instructions and by taking action I will prove over time if this book truly does change lives and help people to achieve their wildest dreams and attain the riches that they desire.

Thank you to those of you who voted unanimously for me to accept the challenge to work through this famous and life changing book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill in my previous post A Mission – Should I Choose to Accept It?. It’s been very encouraging to see that many of you are keen to follow me on this mission and currently 40% of voters are going to join me on this challenge! That’s amazing!

In order to get started, you will need to get the book. Some people prefer the hard copy in which case you can track this down on Amazon or in any good bookstore. There have been revised editions to bring the lessons and examples into the 21st century. I have ordered a hard copy of the original and the revised version:

Think and Grow Rich: The Original 1937 Unedited Edition

(published by the Napoleon Hill Foundation) this is Napoleon Hill’s 1937 personal and unedited copy that they have reproduced and printed in March of 1937.

Think and Grow Rich: The Landmark Bestseller–Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century

(revised by Dr Arthur R Pell and republished by in 2004 by Vermilion) this book uses case studies and anecdotes from contemporary millionaires and billionaires, such as Bill Gates, Mary Kay Ash, Dave Thomas, Michael Jordan and Sir John Templeton with stories of how they achieved their wealth.

If you don’t yet have the book or would prefer an electronic copy then you can grab it right here!

When Think and Grow Rich was published in 1937 it claimed to be one of the most inspirational books of its time along with Dale Carnegie’s ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ which I’m sure you’ve all heard of and Norman Vincent Peale’s ‘The Power of Positive Thinking’. For anyone wanting to pursue success in their lives and in their careers it was essential reading (and still is) and at the time it helped millions of people overcome the poverty of the Depression and create prosperity for themselves, their families and in some cases for their employees as well.

Think and Grow Rich

So who was Napoleon Hill and how did he come to learn of this philosophy that he shared and made him millions? Napoleon Hill was born to a poor family  in 1883 in rural Virginia, orphaned at 12 he was bought up by relatives. His rebellious nature perhaps helped him overcome poverty and he began working at age 13 as a writer for small town newspapers. His career as a reporter funded him through law school. Maybe it was due to his own struggles in overcoming poverty and getting an education that he became obsessed with why people fail to achieve true financial success and happiness in their lives.

His big break came when he was given an assignment to interview famous men and write a series of their success stories. It was this assignment that allowed him to meet Andrew Carnegie a world renowned steel magnate who was so impressed with Napoleon Hill that he commissioned him to spend the next 25 years of his life to interview over 500 millionaires to find the success formula that could be used and shared with the average person.

The interviewees included Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, Charles M. Schwab, Theodore Roosevelt, William Wrigley Jr., John Wanamaker, William Jennings Bryan, George Eastman, Woodrow Wilson, William H. Taft, John D. Rockefeller, F.W Woolworth and many others that aren’t as well known today. How incredible it must have been for him to meet and learn the secrets from so many famous, successful and wealthy businessmen of that time!

During this time he was also lucky for Andrew Carnegie himself to become his mentor, helping him formulate a philosophy of success drawing on the thoughts and experiences of all these people he interviewed.

This book contains the secret, after having been put to a practical test by thousands of people, in almost every walk of life. It was Mr. Carnegie’s idea that the magic formula, which gave him a stupendous fortune, ought to be placed within reach of people who do not have time to investigate how men make money, and it was his hope that I might test and demonstrate the soundness of the formula through the experience of men and women in every calling.

He believed the formula should be taught in all public schools and colleges, and expressed the opinion that if it were properly taught it would so revolutionize the entire educational system that the time spent in school could be reduced to less than half.

This book led to a long career for Napoleon Hill as a consultant to business leaders, a lecturer and writer of several more books and made him a millionaire in his own right. Hill died in 1970 after a long and successful career and at the time the book hadn’t touched the tens of millions of people it has today. It truly is that remarkable and it’s principles are that profound and true that the philosophy spans any time and era and will be applicable for any person at any point in their life – IF they are ready for it.

Are you ready for it?

Are you at a point in your life where you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired?

Do you believe there has GOT to be more to life than joining 98% of people who drudgingly work hard day in day out and feel like you’re getting nowhere fast in what we call the ‘Rat Race’?

Do you wonder why some people seem to attract luck and wealth and opportunities when you don’t?

Do you ever wonder if people used to have time and freedom in their lives to do what they want, go where they want and have abundance?

Do you ever feel trapped in your existence?

What do you do about it?

Are you one of those people who reads self development books?

Do you take courses to learn more about yourself or up-skill yourself so that you can aim higher or change career?

Do you watch inspirational documentaries and read biographies of people that you admire?

Do you know who you admire and why you admire them?

Do you take risks like quitting your job when you don’t have another one lined up?

If you do, how do these things make you feel and how long does that feeling last? Have these things worked for you in the past? Have they changed or improved your life?

Do you know that most people skip doing the most important part of the training? In other words they FAIL TO TAKE ACTION.

I have been guilty of this in the past. I have found that I have gotten to a certain point where these niggling doubts and fears start to talk over what I’m reading and learning with a louder voice that says “Yes but you can’t because…” or “But that won’t work for you because…” Aaaargh! PISS OFF! Who needs thoughts like that controlling and influencing ourselves and our lives?!

Why do we try to defeat ourselves before we even start? Why do we try to talk ourselves out of trying something that we know could bring us all the very things that we want and desire in life? Why do we settle on less than what we dream of and resign ourselves to lives of regret and disappointment because we didn’t TAKE ACTION?

It is FEAR. Basic human fears. It is our conscious thinking minds, our egos, that hold these fears due to their past experiences, observations, selected knowledge and beliefs, that they formed over time, to protect US. Unfortunately, this protection is not unlike a stifling mother who won’t let her child learn for itself by allowing it to take risks and make mistakes. The protective voices we hear are designed to help us in dangerous fight or flight situations but they are not effective when we’re trying to achieve more, achieve success and grow as human beings. We are all guilty of taking the voices too seriously and too literally most of the time.

I’m challenging myself and I challenge you too!

To acknowledge your thinking mind, your ego, accept that it is there and it will say what it says (and often when you don’t need to hear it). You just tell it that right now, for the purpose of this exercise, it needs to step aside and let you try another avenue, another way of thinking and be open minded.

The key is not to disregard these thoughts. They have probably served you well in the past and in certain situations. They are not trying to defeat you they are trying to protect you, the only way they know how.

But there are other voices within you who also know how to help you, they come from your subconscious mind which is linked to other natural and universal forces that can also help you achieve your dreams.

Their voices are quiet and they generally only speak to you once. Often when you ignore them you’ll notice that somewhere down the line, the very thing they said, what they quietly warned you about, will happen and you’ll go “OMG I thought that would happen, dammit!” This is not a coincidence. This is your intuition. You need to learn to let that voice be heard more, it’s amazing the things you can learn from what it says.

What voices are you hearing now?

Are they saying ‘Yes! This feels right, lets do this, I want to know more!’. Perhaps they are they saying this all feels a bit scary and to be cautious.

Whatever your voices are saying, I urge you to keep an open mind to a journey of discovery and read on as I take you through this book. What have you got to lose?

Keep an open mind and vow to TAKE ACTION!

If you are with me on this journey, pick up the book and read the introduction.

In the next post we will be talking about DESIRE, the first of the Principles in Think and Grow Rich. You can also read my previous blog post about Desire which will give you an idea of what is in store.

Awesome! I read Think and Grow Rich like 10 years ago… perhaps it’s time to pull it out again! I think I may understand it more than I did when I was 15 🙂 Good reminder- I’m going to pull this book out.

Also curious about which Coursera course.

Looking forward to reading your insights and discoveries!
